The main goal in Go is to control more territory on the board than your opponent. Territory is gained by surrounding empty areas of the board with your stones and capturing your opponents stones.
A stone or group of stones is captured and removed from the board when all directly adjacent points (up, down, left, right) are occupied by the opponents stones. These points are known as "liberties." If a stone or group of stones loses its last liberty, it is captured.
